Moreau is one of the forerunners and leading artists of the Symbolist movement that took root in the late nineteenth century. Symbolist expression defines itself by the projection onto the canvas of inner visions, often those of the artist himself, visions which an accurate knowledge of Moreau's biography allows us to better understand now more than a century after his death; since that the strictures imposed on his biographers have expired, and the private apartments conserved in the heart of his museum he had so carefully arranged for posterity have now been opened to public view. Gustav Moreau - The Assembler of Dreams presents what is known - and after all quite a lot is known - about the life of the one who called himself the "assembler of dreams".
